It’s very important to clarify that the formats mentioned above ARE NOT file compression formats, but containers that include things like audio and video codecs, subtitles, and so on.
M4V is very similar to MP4, except the first one was developed by Apple to accommodate its products. When it comes to the MKV or MP4 battle, MP4 is certainly more popular and will be supported by more products without the need for conversion, but both support the high-quality H.264 video.
