Need to stop a caller, a spam texter, or someone you do not want reaching you anymore? Your iPhone can handle it without another app. This guide shows how to block a number on iPhone from Phone, Messages, FaceTime, Mail, and Settings. It also explains what blocking does, what it does not do, and how to manage blocked contacts on iOS 26 and older iOS versions.

Quick answer: how to block a number on iPhone

The fastest way to block number on iPhone is from the Phone app. It works for saved contacts and unsaved numbers from your recent calls.

  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Tap Recents.
  3. Tap the Info button next to the number.
  4. Scroll down, tap Block Caller, then confirm Block Contact.

That block applies to phone calls, Messages, and FaceTime from the same number or contact. The person does not get a notification from Apple.

If one spammer keeps changing numbers, blocking one number will not solve the whole problem. Use Silence Unknown Callers, Filter Unknown Senders, or carrier spam tools for broader spam cleanup.

How to block a number on iPhone from the Phone app

Use this method when the unwanted number recently called you. You do not need to save the caller as a contact first.

  1. Open Phone and tap Recents.
  2. Find the number you want to block.
  3. Tap the Info button beside it.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the contact card.
  5. Tap Block Caller.
  6. Tap Block Contact to confirm.

After you confirm, iPhone adds the number to your blocked contacts list. Calls from that number can still go to voicemail, but your iPhone will not ring or show a normal alert.

How to block a number from Messages

Use Messages when the problem starts as a text, iMessage, photo, link, or spam thread. Blocking from Messages also blocks calls and FaceTime from that sender.

  1. Open the Messages app.
  2. Open the conversation from the number or contact.
  3. Tap the name, number, or profile icon at the top.
  4. Tap Info.
  5. Tap Block this Caller.
  6. Confirm Block Contact.

Report Junk and Block this Caller are not the same thing. Report Junk tells Apple about spam. Blocking stops that sender from reaching you.

If the sender used iMessage, you may also see Delete and Report Junk. Use it for spam, but do not treat it as a replacement for blocking if you want the sender added to your blocked list.

Block From the Messages App

How to block someone from FaceTime or Mail

Apple shares the blocked contact list across Phone, Messages, and FaceTime. Apple explains the native options in its guide to blocking phone numbers, contacts, and emails. Mail has its own behavior, but Apple lets you block email senders too.

Block from FaceTime

  1. Open FaceTime.
  2. Find the caller in your FaceTime history.
  3. Tap the Info button beside the name or number.
  4. Scroll down and tap Block Caller.
  5. Confirm the block.

This is useful when someone keeps trying video or audio FaceTime calls but has not called your regular phone number recently.

Block from Mail

  1. Open the Mail app.
  2. Open an email from the sender.
  3. Tap the sender name or email address at the top.
  4. Tap the sender again if Mail opens the contact card.
  5. Tap Block this Contact.

In Apple Mail, blocked email can move to the trash depending on your Mail settings. If you use Gmail, Outlook, or another mail app, manage email blocking inside that app too.

How to block a saved contact from Settings

If the person is already saved in Contacts, Settings gives you a clean way to add them to the blocked list. The path depends on your iOS version.

iOS 26 path

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy & Security.
  3. Tap Blocked Contacts.
  4. Tap Add Blocked Contact.
  5. Choose the contact you want to block.

Older iOS path

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Phone, Messages, or FaceTime.
  3. Tap Blocked Contacts.
  4. Tap Add New.
  5. Choose the saved contact.

You only need to add the person once. The blocked list is shared across Phone, Messages, and FaceTime.

To View Your Blocked Numbers

What happens when you block a number on iPhone?

Blocking a number on iPhone stops the normal alerts from that person. It does not send them a blocked warning, and it does not erase old conversations or call history already on your phone.

  • Calls do not ring your iPhone.
  • Calls may go to voicemail, but you do not get a voicemail notification.
  • Messages and iMessages from the blocked number do not appear in your inbox.
  • FaceTime calls from that number do not ring.
  • The blocked person does not receive an Apple notification.
  • Old texts, call logs, and voicemail already on your iPhone stay there unless you delete them.

Apple does not give you a clean dashboard of blocked contact attempts. If someone you blocked tries to call, you will not see a normal missed-call alert. Voicemails from blocked numbers can appear in a separate blocked voicemail area, depending on carrier support and iOS behavior.

How to find blocked contacts on iPhone

Need to check who is blocked? Use the Blocked Contacts list. This is also how you confirm a number was added after you blocked it from Phone, Messages, or FaceTime.

On iOS 26

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy & Security.
  3. Tap Blocked Contacts.

On older iOS versions

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Phone, Messages, or FaceTime.
  3. Tap Blocked Contacts.

The list shows the contacts, numbers, and email addresses your iPhone has blocked. If you do not see the person there, block them again from the app where they contacted you.

How to unblock a number on iPhone

If you blocked the wrong person or changed your mind, you can unblock the number from the same blocked contacts list.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy & Security > Blocked Contacts on iOS 26, or Phone > Blocked Contacts on older iOS versions.
  3. Find the contact or number.
  4. Swipe left on it.
  5. Tap Unblock.

You can also open the person’s contact card, scroll down, and tap Unblock this Caller if that option appears.

How to block unknown callers on iPhone

If spam calls are the real problem, learn how to block unknown callers on iPhone with Apple’s built-in silence setting. It does not block every spammer, but it cuts a lot of interruptions.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Phone.
  3. Tap Silence Unknown Callers.
  4. Turn Silence Unknown Callers on.

Calls from numbers not in Contacts, recent outgoing calls, or Siri Suggestions go straight to voicemail. They still appear in Recents, so you can call back if it was a real person.

Do not turn this on blindly if you expect calls from doctors, delivery drivers, schools, clients, or interviewers. Unknown numbers can be legitimate.

Silence Unknown Callers

How to filter unknown senders in Messages

Filter Unknown Senders is for texts, not calls. It separates messages from people outside your Contacts into a separate list. It does not fully block them.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Messages.
  3. Scroll to Message Filtering.
  4. Turn on Filter Unknown Senders.

After this, Messages splits known and unknown senders. You can still receive messages from unknown numbers, but they stop crowding your main inbox.

Filter Unknown Senders in Messages

Blocking vs silencing vs filtering

These iPhone settings sound similar, but they solve different problems. Use the setting that matches the interruption you want to stop.

When blocking one number is not enough

Robocallers and scammers often rotate numbers. Blocking each one helps a little, but it turns into whack-a-mole fast. Use a layered setup instead.

  1. Block repeat offenders from Phone or Messages.
  2. Turn on Silence Unknown Callers if you can afford to send unknown calls to voicemail.
  3. Use Filter Unknown Senders to clean up Messages.
  4. Check your carrier’s spam filtering options.
  5. Use trusted Call Blocking & Identification apps only if you need broader spam detection.

For safety advice on spam calls and scam texts, use official resources such as the FTC guide to blocking unwanted calls and Apple’s iPhone guide to filtering and reporting messages. Avoid random “block everything” apps that ask for too much access.

Use iPhone blocking for this. Use Softorino for other Apple headaches.

Number blocking belongs to iOS. You do not need WALTR PRO, AltTunes, or any third-party utility to block calls and texts. Your iPhone already has the right tools.

Softorino is useful for different Apple frustrations. If your next problem is moving music, videos, PDFs, or ringtones to iPhone without iTunes, WALTR PRO helps you move files to iPhone without iTunes. For blocking numbers, stick with the native settings above.

FAQs

Can I block a number without saving it?

Yes. Open Phone > Recents, tap the Info button beside the number, then tap Block Caller. You can do the same from a Messages thread without saving the sender.

Can blocked numbers leave voicemail?

Yes, blocked callers can still leave voicemail in some cases. Your iPhone will not ring, and you should not get a normal voicemail notification.

Will someone know I blocked them?

No. Apple does not send a blocked notification. The person may guess from call or message behavior, but iPhone does not confirm it for them.

How do I know if someone I blocked tried to contact me?

You usually do not. Blocked calls, texts, and FaceTime attempts do not appear like normal alerts. Some blocked voicemails may appear in a separate voicemail area.

Does Filter Unknown Senders block texts?

No. Filter Unknown Senders separates texts from people outside your Contacts. It helps clean your inbox, but it does not block the sender.

Can I block all spam calls automatically?

Not perfectly. Silence Unknown Callers, carrier filtering, and Call Blocking & Identification apps can reduce spam, but scammers can still rotate numbers.

How do I unblock a number on iPhone?

Open Settings, go to Blocked Contacts, swipe left on the number or contact, then tap Unblock. On iOS 26, look under Settings > Privacy & Security > Blocked Contacts.
