This guide will help you transfer audiobooks to iPhone without iTunes in various formats.

When I got my first iPhone, I wanted to have everything in it – from good photo editors, lots of music, and all Apple audiobooks I could find.

Previously, I used to listen to audiobooks on a CD player, because I was unsure how to add audiobooks to iPhone and unaware of how convenient it was.

Of course, like most iPhone users, I felt really confused while syncing audiobooks with iTunes and I couldn’t understand the difference between MP3 audiobooks and M4B audiobooks.

So, I went to the great lengths to find the perfect solution and make it an easy ride for you once and for all.

M4B vs. MP3

Before we explore how to add audiobooks to iPhone, it’s key to understand the difference between the two most common formats – MP3 audiobooks and M4B audiobooks.

M4B is perfect for listening on iOS devices, but it’s not supported by Android devices. Meanwhile, MP3 is accepted by most media players ever known. It’s the most popular audio format, so you won’t face compatibility problems.

But there’s also a big perk of listening to M4B audiobooks instead of MP3. You can mark a point where you stopped a file. This means that, as you pause your audiobook, you’ll start from that point next time you open it.

M4B vs MP3

Essentially, M4B is the native format of audiobooks on iPhone or any other iOS device.

Audiobook marking was made for simplicity. Don’t you find it annoying, when you always have to look for the moment you stopped listening? Believe me: remembering the time you paused won’t work that well. What’s more: you can even divide an audiobook into chapters using markers.

The last thing: M4B stays in iBooks, but MP3 files go to the Music app. This is probably the most crucial difference. So, if you’re using an iPhone, but still choose to listen to audiobooks in MP3, you can check out our in-depth article with 5 simple ways how to add MP3 to iPhone.

How to purchase M4B in iBooks?

You can buy an audio version in iBooks Store, but they’re not available for all the books. Alternatively, you can go to iTunes Store and search for audiobooks there and purchase them.

M4b iBooks

You can find most of the audio versions for the books in the iTunes Store

I’ve found out a neat trick that helps you play iBooks texts aloud without buying an audio version. You can do it with Siri. Just follow the instructions below!

  • Go to General Settings, Accessibility

  • Tap Speak Selection and choose the speaking rate (to make Siri read clearly)

  • Go to iBooks, select Scroll in Themes (a button)

  • Select a word from which to make Siri start and scroll to any part you want

  • As the menu appears, tap Speak. Siri starts reading a book!

That’s somewhat weird but worth trying. Just for fun.

Apple’s library offers a good variety of so-called “free iTunes books”, but it’s far from what the internet has to offer. The websites that I found to have the most diverse collection of best audiobooks are Lit2Go, LibriVox, and Mindwebs. My current go-to is certainly LibriVox.

After you got yourself an eCopy of the desired book, you can quickly drop it to the device of your choice using WALTR 2.

In conclusion

It looks like people are becoming more familiar with the technology. Many of us now replace paper books with electronic ones. E-books are easy to carry with yourself and don’t need too much space.
